Kelly Lenahan is a pianist from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She received her master’s degree from the Royal College of Music, London, where she studied piano under John Byrne and organ under Margaret Phillips as a Stanbridge Drake-Brockman Scholar and recipient of the Olive Rees Prize. Kelly received an undergraduate degree in music performance from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she studied under Dan Landes and Robert Marler.
As a collaborative pianist, Kelly has worked as a chamber musician and vocal accompanist for ensembles in London, Boston, and Washington, D.C.. Outside of classical music, she has also worked as a session musician and touring musician, performing with singer-songwriters, folk bands, and rock bands in the US and UK. An enthusiastic ballet pianist, Kelly has collaborated with Pineapple, Rambert School, Jose Mateo Ballet Theatre, and Harvard Dance Center. She has been a company pianist with the Washington Ballet, and has been a guest pianist for Mark Morris Dance Group and American Ballet Theatre. She has appeared as a soloist with the Britten-Pears Orchestra and the Nashville Symphony, and has participated in masterclasses with Olga Kern, Maurice Hinson, Vadym Kholodenko, Sean Chen, and Marvin Blickenstaff. As an organist, Kelly has studied and performed music from Bach and Buxtehude to Bridge and Nico Muhly, performing solo recitals throughout London, as well as collaborating with percussionists and new music ensembles. Currently, Kelly is devoting her solo piano work to discovering, studying, and performing works by female composers. She has taken a particular interest in the music of Louise Farrenc and Lili Boulanger, and has recently given UK and European premiers of rare works by female composers from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Additional honors were received from the National Federation of Music Clubs and the American College of Musicians’ Piano Guild, who named Kelly an International Member in 2012. Performance highlights include appearances at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, Grand Ole Opry, Fishmongers’ Hall, and the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. Her performances with the Britten-Pears Orchestra are released on the Naxos label.
Currently, Kelly resides in Copenhagen, Denmark. where she is a company pianist for the Royal Danish Ballet.
